Metal Roofing Substrates and Coatings

Metal Roofing Substrates and Coatings

Substrates and Coatings
When you get into the market for a metal roof, there are a few things you need to take into consideration for the long-term life and performance of your roof. These include the variety of substrates and coatings that are available to you. These are crucial, and the wrong selection could result in a poor roofing experience.

Galvanized and Galvalume are the most popular steel substrates that are used in the roofing industry. Galvanized is coated with zinc, while Galvalume is coated with an alloy of zinc that also contains aluminum. With that being said, they are both a great substrate to use with any metal panels.

When using Galvanized substrates, the larger amount of zinc coating, the better protection against any types of corrosion. Two of the most commonly used are G100 and G60. These relate to the total zinc contained on each side of the panels. G100 contains one ounce of zinc for every square foot of panel. However, G60 contains 0.6 ounces of zinc per square foot. It’s important to consider that the G100 option contains 66% more zinc than the G60 option. This protection will have a direct correlation to the panel’s longevity and long-term aesthetics.

For most uses, Galvalume will offer the best solution for any long-term projects. Plus, it’s superior performance has been proven time and time again. With over four decades of testing, and Galvalume continuing to outperform Galvanized panels, steel mills warranty it against rupture, perforation, and failure due to corrosion.

While what substrate is very important, the coating system is equally as important. This is due to the panel being exposed to environmental elements over the lifespan of the panel. These environmental conditions can break down the coating and cause the panels to fade and chalk. This fading and chalking are not pleasing to the eyes, and the degree of this is directly related to the coating system used.

Polyester, Kynar 500 (PVDF), and Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP) are the most popular coatings for metal panels. Of these three, the Kynar 500 (PVDF) coatings provide the best protection against any and all fading or chalking, and it is the most proven to provide long-term performance.

Kynar 500 (PVDF) coatings are the best choice for long service life, chalk resistance, and color retention. Selecting this option means a longer lasting “new” appearance for the years to come, unlike Silicone Modified Polyester (SMP) coatings which can start to degrade and look aged after only a few years.

Preparing for Hurricanes this Hurricane Season in Houston

Preparing for Hurricanes this Hurricane Season in Houston

Summertime in Houston, TX means warm weather and sunshine; but, with this also comes the dreaded hurricane season. For the homeowner whose ever experienced a hurricane, you are all too familiar with the damage which can be caused. If you want to ensure your home is prepared, these are a few tips to prepare your home, shield it from possible flooding and major roof damage.

Buy supplies
Boarding your windows will plywood, having sandbags in place to go around the home’s perimeter, and having strong duct-tape in place to border windows in the event of cracking or chips, is a must. The problem is that most people wait until a hurricane is looming in order to buy supplies. Not only are they costlier, but they are also limited when a hurricane is fast approaching. So, make sure you have these supplies, as well as food, water, fuel, and sternos in place in the event electricity goes down. Of course flashlights and batteries, as well as some canned foods should be on hand in the event you can’t cook for a few days.

Check your insurance
Another misconception people have is that as long as they have homeowners insurance they are covered. This is not only a mistake, but can result in major damage and loss not being covered. So, in high risk areas, such as Houston, make sure you have additional food, water damage, and proper coverage in place. This should also extend to auto insurance, in the event a window is damaged or the car is damaged by trees or downed wires.

Back things up
Loss of power doesn’t only hinder your ability to cook a meal or turn on the ac, it can also result in a loss of important documentation. In today’s digital age, we store everything online, and typically don’t think about possibly losing such information in the event of power loss. So make sure you have things stored online, backed up, and secure. Especially if you operate a home business or have important documentation stored on your computer, make sure you back it up.

Have a plan in place
Another factor people don’t consider is that in some instances a mandatory evacuation is put into effect. Where will you go? How will you get there? Make sure you have a plan in place, a place to stay, and a way to keep your family and pets safe, in the event you have to leave your home during hurricane season. Even if you don’t want to, in emergencies you may be forced to, so you might as well prepare (and do the preparation to your home, such as boarding the windows) early, to avoid last minute struggles and safety concerns.

A hurricane can cause a great deal of roof damage and wreak havoc. But if you prepare early, it can also save plenty of headaches, and make the period a little easier on your family. In the event a major storm is brewing, these are a few ways to prepare early, and ensure your family is ready for the storm which is approaching.

5 Ways To Tell If You Need to Replace Your Roof

5 Ways To Tell If You Need to Replace Your Roof

If you are a homeowner you have probably struggled with the question of when is the right time to replace roof or whether you need a roofing contractor to help you establish that. Well, there are several simple ways you can use to tell whether you need to replace your roof. You could start by establishing its age, looking for characteristics displayed by the shingles that need replacement and just whether there is some rot or mold on the roof. Let’s take a look at some of these factors!

1. How Old is Your Roof?

The age of your roof is probably one of the key things that you should consider when determining whether you need to replace your roof. But this will majorly depend on the type of material that has been used to make the roof. So a good starting point will be for you to check through the records that document the details of your roof and establish the exact material that it is made of. For instance, If it is made of Asphalt or Cedar you will need to replace the roof if it is between 10 to 15 years. While for materials like tiles or metals with a high degree of durability you will need to do some replacement after every 50+ years.

2. Are The Roof’s Shingle Edges Buckled Up?

One of the easiest ways to tell whether your roof needs to be replaced is to check the shingle edges. Mostly, after a long period of being exposed to heat, the shingle edges of the roof tend to curve up as they lose their ability to hold together. A good thing is these type of singles are usually visible and one can easily note them by observing the roof from outside. You definitely need to replace your roof once you see this as failure to do so will lead to more problems in future like a leaking roof.

3. Are There Missing Shingles On The Roof?

You can also know it’s time to replace your roof if you observe that there are missing shingles or there is a large portion of the roof that has cracked shingles. This is usually caused by the roof being exposed to adverse weather conditions like direct sunlight, snow pack or extreme wind. But it’s a phenomenon that develops slowly and sometimes you can detect it if you observe large amounts of shingle granules in your gutter which are early signs of massive wear and tear on your roof.

3. Try Observing The Roof From The Attic

A roof that needs to be replaced urgently will not only show you signs on the outside but also on the inside. And the best spot to analyze your roof to establish if it’s in good condition is from the attic. One of the things you will need to look out for is whether there are some light rays streaming through the roof. You should also look out for dark spots or water trails on the walls that are proof of a leaking roof. All these are signs of a damaged roof and so you will need to consult with your roofing contractor to establish the extent of the damage and the cost of replacement.

5. Look for Any Rot, Moisture or Mold

Your roof’s biggest enemy is moisture. The bad thing is that most times, it’s usually difficult to tell whether there is moisture finding it’s way into your roof. However, you can always tell if your roof is leaking by looking for signs of rot or mold on the roof. One of biggest signs of a rotting roof is a deck that is sunken due to continuous leakage on the roof. On the other hand, mold always follows moisture and its appearance on the roof is a sure sign of moisture trapped in the roof. Something that will cause rot over time.

So you really don’t need to struggle with the question of whether it is time to replace your roof. Just check if it is over 20 years old, look out for shingles that are either buckled up, cracked or missing. You can also go into the attic and look for some light escaping through the roof or signs that the roof is leaking. And if you observe any of these signs then it’s probably time to call your Houston roofing contractor.

Steel Standing Seam Metal Roofs

Steel Standing Seam Metal Roofs

When considering investing in a standing seam roof, there are important factors that determine the quality and integrity of the product. Comparing apples to apples is often overlooked. For instance, some companies will use inferior products as a technique to underbid the competition and not inform the customer of the differences.

All Star Roof Systems uses 24 gauge steel panels as opposed to 26 gauge. Many roofing companies will also roll their own panels in order to save on material costs. Why would this compromise the integrity of the product? Well, the machine being used has to be calibrated routinely. All Star has the manufacturer roll each panel to ensure quality control and warranty control. If other companies roll panels on site, you cannot be sure of the calibration let alone the affect of pulling that machine around Houston roads to get to the job site.

Another technique used by other companies is to use a standing seam mimic. Lap panels are not true standing seam products. They are fastened through the panel itself. It has no actual clips to hold the panel in place. This system causes a stifling of natural expansion and contraction and can also cause contortion of panels and pulling of fasteners. We install clips which allow for natural expansion and contraction of panels on the roof.

Warranties are also a part of the decision process. All Star has always puts lifetime workmanship warranty on our standing seam roofs.

Lastly, we use a product that has an adhesive in each seam that bonds with the panels it overlaps to ensure water tightness. Many of the self rolling companies do not have this capability. We hope that if you’re in the market for a standing seam roof, you take into consideration all the options that are available and make an educated decision.
